History
In 1996 Blase Harris, M.D. began to close his full time medical/psychiatric practice in Honolulu and move to the Big Island of Hawaii where he began work on developing Antaeus-Ulaleo in the Valley of the Five Mountains. He was in part inspired by the mission statement of North Hawaii Community Hospital to reconnect health care with spirituality.

Guiding Principles
Blase sought, however, to make the spiritual specific and fundamental to the development of fully functioning human beings, rather than vague invocations of a source energy or generically divine being that remained in the medical illness paradigm.

Rather illness is seen as constellations of symptoms or signals sent by God to awaken a soul to its’ own existence. Illness is seen as part of a process of a soul giving birth to itself. The re-birthing or “born again” phenomena results in a shift away from false identification with the ego roles we find ourselves in towards the calm being, the “I-AM” presence within each of us.

The danger here is that false identification with ego can lead to ego-identified human beings insisting they are in fact soul-aware, a self-deluded kind of ego inflation – especially at those times when even within the Matrix of the unconscious political-social world, the soul is sometimes given a nod of high regard.  Seeking external validation as a primary goal results in ego-inflation, and reactive judgementalism even among those claiming to serve God. The ego-roles we find ourselves in need guidance from the soul within.

We must experentially become aware of the soul within. In order to experience that soul we must connect to the Divine Energy Grid which gives us immediate, immanent awareness of God’s Love for us and every other soul – no matter how confused and lost.

It then becomes delightful and intriguing to serve the All wherever we find ourselves, moving or remaining where we are and shifting or not shifting our ego-roles in whatever way serves the All.

The ego then serves the soul, not the other way around.  The ego – to quote Charles Morrison – becomes the soul’s “avatar” in the phenomenal world – guided by the soul which is Spirit and therefore connected to the Holy Spirit and God – and therefore never in conflict with itself – the outward world then becomes a place of manifestation and manifestation serves as a guide not as a source of validation.

Methods

Agricultural-Spiritual Education
Conscious Beings become Stewards of the Earth. Stewards of the Earth become Conscious Beings – there cannot be one without the other – and so a new kind of agricultural-spiritual education is re-invented (as one might re-invent the wheel or re-enter the Garden of Eden) at Antaeus-Ulaleo.

We explore ways of maximizing the nutrient value of food – going beyond the politically correct concept of “organic” to the question, “How might we maximize nutrients in food?” On the physical plane awareness is tied to the balanced functioning of brain and body turning on the light of the Mind which then serves God through the very essence of its being – the Soul within – which, by its’ very nature seeks to serve the All.

Maximizing the nutrient value of food cannot arise out of any kind of economic considerations. No and again no.  Even if the maximizing of the nutrient value of food were economically neutral or even if it were economically prohibitive, we seek life.  We place the gift of life – intrinsically connected to the feeling of life we have within ourselves – which in turn is connected to God (God is Love) in the first position.  To do otherwise is to commit the old favorite sin of mankind – idolatry – placing anything other than God/Love in the first position.

“Sin” is a term from archery meaning, “missing the mark”.

Putting economy rather than love of God and neighbor in the first position is what has led to a world in which low nutrient/no nutrient food is a lucrative business – and in which the Art of Medicine has degenerated to symptom chasing with expensive patented pharmaceuticals, which then in turn results in whole new classes of symptoms that in turn are chased with patented pharmaceuticals until it has become common place for people to be on 8 to 15 medications without ever addressing the fundamental problem.

Patented pharmaceuticals sometimes serve a minor function of symptom reduction in the practice of the Art of Medicine as the fundamental causes of disease are addressed.

At Antaeus-Ulaleo we return to Hippocrates dictum: “the best food is the best medicine and the best medicine is the best food.”

Herbs are special use foods requiring high nutrient value in their soils and experience and art in their proper use.

We trust in God first – not money first – and so with love in our hearts seek to grow the highest nutrient-value food possible – and trust that as we wake up to higher levels of functioning we will discover ways of serving one another and ourselves that cannot occur to human beings functioning at a tiny fraction of their full potential.  We will find ways of making lifestyle compatible with human life, rather than relying on pharmaceuticals to treat the signs and symptoms that arise from lifestyles not compatible with human life.

We put first the Kingdom of Heaven – a community based on love - and trust that then and only then will the rest of our needs be truly met.

When people do eat healthfully, they become more aware of the contradictions and confusions that appear to be all around them, but, in fact, are projections of what is within them. In the long forbidden Gospel of Thomas, Jesus says, “The Kingdom of Heaven is upon the face of the earth and men do not see it.”

(Note: man/men is the common denominator of men and women. To say woman is to leave out the man, which may be appropriate in some contexts, but only when you want to leave the man out.  To say man is to include them both.  Man is in both man and woman. Beware of the current vogue of politically correct reactive sexism. We all need one another.)

In the Gospel of Thomas we also find:  “If you bring forth what is within you, it will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, it will destroy you.”

St. Augustine who was the coolest party-boy of his time finally had a spiritual meltdown and after his awakening spoke of “the eternal internal.”

The state of non-enlightenment is the state in which one is not aware of “the eternal internal.” Blaise Pascal wrote that the trouble with mankind is human beings (un-enlightened) cannot tolerate being by themselves in a quiet room.

What feels empty, what feels like void and profound aloneness is carried within each of us.  Eating full nutrient food begins to wake us up, but this is frightening to those who do not understand what is happening.

Whatever hatreds and resentments are held inside become all too apparent.  They continue to get projected and continue to create hell on the outside.

The sense of void is enough to chase most people back to low nutrient food and unhealthy lifestyles dulling their consciousness without acknowledging it by embracing disease and lifestyles not compatible with human life, and then demanding medication to kill the pain of the signs and symptoms, which are warning them they are going down the wrong path.

Teaching lifestyles compatible with human life will not work/cannot work, will only lead to more suffering and pain, and labyrinthine sets of rules that keep people locked in the mutually accusatory morally judgmental hell.  The fundamental problem must be addressed.

The fundamental rules are simple.  Even atheists call out to God in times of extreme duress. Why? Because you have a mechanism within that pushes you that way.  Do what comes natural and do it more. Ask and keep asking, “knock and the door will open.”

Then as you wake up, love those around you, look for your kindred souls who are waking up with you.  Look for those who are a rung or two further up the ladder than you, and always help – be wary, wise as serpents and gentle as doves – of those still caught in unconsciousness.  Do what you can to help them. Always pray for them. The only reason to talk about anyone is to figure out how to love them.

As people wake up, those who have gone before have left records for us – are in fact in our very presence to guide us to act as mid-wives and servants to those going through the born-again process.

The anesthetic for rebirth is Love – for surrounded by souls who are already soul aware – the palpable love of God and trust in God – the soul giving birth to itself is no longer a victim of fear – and can complete its born again process where it becomes a Whole, autonomous yet connected to the All.

In this context, all of the Arts become the Healing Arts.  The Art of Medicine is actually a subset of Theater Arts.

Jesus sought to remind the Pharisee/Healers of his time in the Temple/Hospital of his time that they were hypocrites.  Hypocrite is Greek for actor. An unconscious actor gets identified with the role he is in, and thinks maintaining his role is the point of acting.  The Pharisees were getting so identified with their roles (cool costumes and admiring validation from unconscious seekers of validation) that they were forgetting their purpose – the purpose of every action in the phenomenal world – to love God and to be conduits through which God’s Love freely flows to All.
